This Week's Program:
Anne Buelteman, Robert's lovely daughter, will tell us about her career in show biz.
Last Week's Program:
Pres. Barbara Schmidt did not introduce our speaker as he needs no introduction. Newsletter Editor, Dean Babcock talked to us about “Re-inventing Streetcars, 2010.” Dean hails from Minneapolis, MN, a city of lakes, that had one of the best streetcar systems in the nation. As there was not a car in his family, he became very familiar with the streetcar system and used it for all of his travels in Minneapolis and St. Paul. He described how General Motors schemed to eliminate streetcars and to substitute buses instead. Why? GM didn’t make streetcars, but they did make buses. Dean first became familiar with streetcar travel in the 6th grade, when he was the school messenger for Penn school. He knew how to get to the ballpark, the lakes and the Univ. of Minn. He showed us many pictures of beautiful, new, streetcars being built all over the world that don’t use carbon fuels or leave horse manure behind.
Next Week's Program:
Jackie Young, planner for the Town of Woodside, will discuss with us proposed changes to the Master Plan.
Club News:
Your Editor is happy to announce that we lost no Club Members during the July 4th weekend. There was a fire near Skyline Blvd. within spitting distance of several of our member's houses. Ken Broome was accosted by the CHP for trying to walk to his house. Dana, rhymes with banana, was turned back also and nearly missed her party. Our esteemed La Presidente tried to get to the party but gave up and went home and had a cold one. I warned everybody about the dangers of fireworks-especially the bombs called 580's (or something like that), but hadn't thought about houses burning down. Please be CAREFUL! Are club is rather small, you know,
Coming Events:
Sept. 8th, 2010 No meeting. Labor Day - No labor today! Kick back and have a cold one!
Next Board Meeting: Tuesday, August 3rd, 7:30am, Church Library. Please let La Presidente Barbara know if you can't make it.
Rotary Means Business: Wednesday, August 4th, 5:30pm At David's Encore Performance Catering, where the elite meet to eat munchies and exchange ideas and phone numbers.
Rotary International Convention: May 21-25, 2011, New Orleans - Great beaches, by then the water will be warm and the tar balls may be gone.
Taste of Woodside: Sunday, September 19th, 4-8pm. Talk to your friends. Recall the balmy September evening tasting the best things the chefs of our area know how to make. Sip the nectar of our best vineyards, forget the problems of the world and the deficit of California. If they procrastinate, your friends may find no tickets left. Don't let this happen to them! Save the date!
Announcements: Keep up with what is happening in the hydraulic world of central Califonria. Talk to Ken Broome about turbines, canals, irrigation water and generating electricity. If youi've never worked on a real jet-propelled water wheel, talk to Ken, he is in need of volunteers.
