Many-times President, Barbara Schmidt, introduced her friend, Barbara Pierce, to talk to us about her experiences with American Sign Language (ASL). Barbara is a former Mayor and current Council Member of Redwood City. In 1974 Barbara cared for 2 deaf children and saw the usefulness of ASL and the need for teachers. She studied ASL in 1976-1978 at Canada College. She travelled in the East and to Florida but relocated to the Peninsula and became a deafness specialist. She says “Signing isn’t pantomime,” and she is devoted to spreading the word of the “Joy of Signing.” She gave a talk at Gallaudet University in Washinngton, D.C. to that effect. She gives talks to school groups and endorses useful books like Lew Fant’s “Sign Language” that use cartoons as a way to get the message across.
