Regular Meeting                                                                                     March 31st 2010

7:30 AM - 8:30 AM Wednesday with breakfast by Encore Performance Catering, fellowship, project updates and an interesting speaker from the community.  Guild Hall, Woodside Village Church, 3154 Woodside Road, Woodside, California  Guests are not only welcome but encouraged!

This Week's Program:  San Mateo Community College  Tom Moore will be our speaker and will talk about new programs at the college and about the successes of many of the students.

Last  Week's Program:  (courtesy of Last Week Editor, Dean Babcock)  Alan Holdship, our newest member delivered his "ice breaker" talk. He is also our newest CITIZEN, VOTER AND TAXPAYER! Alan was born in Manchester, England, where he attended William Holmes school, he majored in sports and dabbled in education.  Alan's profession is Marketeer, his company is White Rock, whose motto is "Building on ideas to make better ideas."  For example: He reread an essay by Guillaume Apollonaire (1880-1918), "Musings of a new American", to get better ideas for this talk.  He has 4 sisters and 1 brother.  He is a "Child of the Fifties" and his hobby is football.  He is proud  to be a "Blue" and donned The Manchester United team's famous scarf for us, which is recogniszed throughout the British Empire and the IFL.  He is also fond of tennis, cricket and street hockey (which he plays with his sister's racquet.)  He is married to Liz and they haved lived hither and yon and as of 2003 are happily settled in the King's Mt. area.  At the swearing-in ceremony, with 1302 others from 150 countries, he was happy to find out that he now has the right to BEAR ARMS, serve on a jury and VOTE!  He is proud that he satisfactorily completed the 10 page application form for citizenship, after all he has traveled a lot, 31 COUNTRIES! He was surprised that the FBI could fingerprint him without using that messy old ink.  He took the oath on March 10th, his kids were there at the Paramount Theatre in SFO.  He proudly showed us his certificate that proclaimed him a CITIZEN of these UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

Next Week's Program:   Winter Olympics, 1960, Squaw Valley from the perspective of Dean Babcock who was a member of the ski patrol some 50 years ago.  Dean will reminise and perhaps sing about his memories of that experience.

Club News:  First Anniversary for Guatemala Library The Xolsacmalja library celebrated its first anniversary on March 26th with a lot of fanfare and a surprise visit from the Norwegian Ambassador to Guatemala who no doubt was curious about what the Finns were up to with their project to promote and record the indigenous culture of the community.  We will have a speaker on April 14th from the MACHI Project who recently spent several days at the library and she will give us an update on how the library has impacted the community.
