This Week's Program: Jane Ganahl on Jane Ganahl Jane Ganahl ( Bob Buelteman's daughter) has been a journalist, humorist, author, consultant, editor, and community organizer in San Francisco for twenty-five years. She is the author of the novelized memoir, Naked on the Page: The Misadventures of My Unmarried Midlife, which is in development for a TV series
Last Week's Program: (courtesy of Last Week Editor, Dean Babcock) Our “Never-Been-President”, architecturally endowed, long-time, member, Ken Hayes, of Hayes Design Group, LLC, told us of his recent success in obtaining an award to renovate a humongous condominium in the vicinity of Zijuatanejo, Mexico. Ken flew down to the sultry southland location to absorb some of the extravagant local culture designed for needy, retired, American surgeons who are intent on saving their hard earned dollars by spending only pesos. Actually, the apartment complex is not in “Ziville”, but rather in the exotic suburb of Madeira. A Google satellite image of its picturesque bay shows a stunning beach and a few sailboats. A search on the internet revealed that the paucity of sailing vessels is the result of the lack of battery, solar or wind powered air conditioners. Proposals have been sent to HUD for funding for research institutes to R&D HVAC units to remove this disincentive to luxury yachting. Ken showed us pictures of apartment and condominium units that have been developed in suitable view-rich sites for both wealthy surgeons and the proletariat retirees. Ken’s staff is now researching alternatives to the thatch used to roof these lesser units. (Thatch wears out rapidly due to the habits of local birds using it to build their habitats.) Ken and his architecturally-inclined colleagues enjoyed touring the area and Ken got many new ideas to add to his architectural tool kit. We (including Ken’s father-in-law) are very proud of our internationally known, architecturally gifted, member. Copious applause was the immediate response to Ken’s delightful talk.
