This Week's Program:  Teaching English in Tanzania

Rae Schmidt will tell us about her adventures teaching English at a Masai girls' school in Tanzania.

Last  Week's Program:  (courtesy of Last Week Editor, Dean Babcock)  International Chair, Ken Broome, and new member, Jim Sanderson, reported on their  participation in the Woodside Elementary School Science Fair. When Bill Dolniuk, who is retiring, called out the categories, Jim raised his hand quickly on the subject “Behavioural Sciences.”  So for their talk, Ken (a physical scientist) deferred to Jim.

This was Jim’s first experience as a science fair judge. He was very impressed with the level of the kid’s work and the range of subjects. “They have really done their homework!” he said.  Each judge is given a report card for each project with 5 scoring categories, 50 points max for each category.  The standard sized display boards set the amount of space available to each student.  Ken and Jim judged 8 projects. Jim noted the high level of participation. He cited as an example a study of sales techniques.  The student offered his subjects various items and got their reactions to seeing, hearing and touching the items.  Jim wondered how the experimenter measured the response.  Unfortunately, Ken and Jim did not have time to interview their winner.  The sixth grade winner will go on to the Bay Area Science Fair and perhaps to the state and national!

Next Week's Program:  American Freedom  Fred Lacosse, former TV anchor on KNTV and KRON, will give a 45-minute presentation entitled "Your American Freedoms"

Club NewsAlan Holdship is about to take his US citizenship exam.  Good luck Alan!  Hopefully, Alan has memorized the Pledge of Allegiance by now.
