This Week's Program:  Seismic Faults President, Dave Hyman, will intorduce Sheldon Breiner who will tell you everything you wanted, or perhaps not wanted to know, about seismic faults including the one you are sitting on.

Last  Week's Program:   (courtesy of Last Week Editor, Dean Babcock)  Past President Sandie Pugh introduced Susan Lang and Robin Flint to talk to us about their work with the Folger Estate Stables project.  Susan said this is the eighth year of the project, which is located in Wunderlich Park.  Their goal is to increase public awareness of the stables, provide public access, develop children’s programs and public events involving horses.

Robin said he got involved when he encountered this “unusual building” on a walk in the park, he lives just down the road.  The Folger family gave the stables to the S. M. County Parks Division for housing horses.  Rob showed us his pictures, it is a BIG building, and it was not in good condition.  It had been damaged by dry rot and termites and needed extensive renovation.

They raised funds to start the renovation.  Rob’s pictures showed steps in the rebuilding, which included removing recent changes and additions to restore the stables to their original design, as envisioned by the architect Arthur Brown Jr, who later became nationally famous for designing buildings such as Coit Tower. The Stable building was accepted into the National Registry of Heritage buildings in 2004.

They are now preparing a short video to be shown to children’s tours and the public regarding the history of the building.  There is a foundation to receive donations or bequests to support the program.

Next Week's Program:  Christmas and New Year's in Guatemala

Your roving newsletter editor, Joan Fuetsch, will show photos of the holiday season in Guatemala including also some project updates and a bit of Machu Picchu if there is time.
