This Week's Program: Where the Water Meets the Sky This week we meet on Tuesday evening for a 7pm screening of the award winning documentary film produced by CAMFED (Campaign for Female Education). A group of women orphaned by AIDS in Zambia learn how to communicate through the medium of film and speak out about their lives changing attitudes in their AIDS ridden community. Coffee and cookies will be provided by Encore Performance Catering. Club members are requested to arrive at 6pm to help set up for the screeening. Please encourage everyone you know to come. The screeening is free but tax deductible donations (checks preferred) to CAMFED would be appreciated.
Last Week's Program: (courtesy of Last Week Editor, Dean Babcock) During our last regular meeting on November 18th President, David Hyman, introduced our favorite Taste of Woodside auctioneer, Jack Stephens, of the Peninsula Sunrise Rotary Club, to talk to us about the City Trees project. City Trees has planted 2323 trees since 2000. The trees are donated and are sponsored by Sunset Magazine, the State of California and many other organizations. It is truly a ROTARY project. It is amazing to feel the difference the “urban forest” makes – it is cooler, flowers grow better, people feel better.
Trees are a 50 year investment. They are planted from a 5 gallon bucket when they are about 7 feet tall. Some of the volunteers are only 4 feet tall, but they will come back when they are over six feet tall and show THEIR tree to their children and later their grand children. “Civilization is when old men plant trees in whose shade they will not sit.”
One volunteer from San Mateo, a banker, showed up in his white linen suit and got mud on his new, fancy shoes. Another volunteer, named David, helped him by pounding in the 8 foot support “stake” with a few blows from the Super Duper Post Pounder. Jack had a suspicion that he was working off his aggressive feelings towards one of his unreasonable clients. Maintenance is provided by some cities, property owners or dedicated volunteers. The future of the Trees Project looks good, especially with help from Rotary clubs like ours.
Next Week's Program: Rotarian and Woodside resident Ken Broome will tell us about his water project that he has been working on for many years and for which he just received a substantial grant from the state of California. Congratulations Ken!
