Last  Week's Program:

Meeting of Oct. 7, 2009-10-11

President David Hyman introduced Bob French, a volunteer docent at Filoli, to speak to us on the activities, programs and mission of that grand mansion.  Bob hails from Little Rock, Arkansas and attended Hendrix College in Conway, AR.   He is a retired Navy Captain and served mostly at Mechanicsburg, PA.

Filoli was built between 1915 and 1917 for William Bowers Bourn II and his wife, Agnes Moody Bourn.  Mr. Bourn owned the Spring Valley Water Company and the land surrounding Crystal Springs lakes.  The original source of the acronym was “Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life."  Following the deaths of the Bourns in 1936, the estate was sold to Mr. and Mrs. William P. Roth, owners of the Matson Navigation Company, in 1937.  Mrs. Roth, who was sick of war changed the name to “Fidelity, etc”

Bob showed us a delightful slide show of the elegant rooms, lovely formal gardens and the cluster of cluster of handsome buildings.  Over the years, Filoli has had several earthquake retrofits, sitting, as it does, right atop the San Andreas fault.

Bob described many of the interesting activities that highlight the busy year of Filoli and that are open to the public for reasonable fees.   He also described the benefits available to members and volunteers.  For further intormation call (650) 364-8300.

 Next Week's Program:

President, Dave Hyman, will introduce Oliver Bock who will talk about The Green Riders which is an electric bicycle ride across the country featuring sustainable solutions at events along the way.
