Regular Meeting                                                                                             July 22th, 2009

7:30 AM - 8:30 AM Wednesday with breakfast by Encore Performance Catering, fellowship, project updates and an interesting speaker from the community.  The last Wednesday of some months we meet at 6:00pm at a local restaurant for and hors d'oeuvres and no host bar and meeting new people.  Please check our website calendar for details.

Morning meetings:  Guild Hall, Woodside Village Church, 3154 Woodside Road, Woodside, California  Guests are not only welcome but encouraged!

This Week's Program:  Pencils President, Dave Hyman, will introduce Katie Weissenborn Vanoncini of the General Pencil Company who will talk about the history of pencils

Last  Week's Program:   (courtesy of Last Week Editor, Dean Babcock)  Honorary Member Sue Bennett spoke to us about their work in Bali with the Rotary Club of Ubud.  Currently they are funding all the work themselves and as the scope and the costs increase they are looking for help.

Sue showed us some videos of the school kids dancing in their native costumes.  They rent the costumes as they outgrow them often and they are costly.  They make instruments out of recycled materials such as bamboo, metal cans and plastic tubing. They call it “Recycled Music.” A big feature is the parade with a segmented “Barong”, a fearsome dragon manned by several students.

The students are very interested in studying English and in English dictionaries.  The Bennett’s are moving into a program called “Future Vision” with other Rotarians to plan a program to cover school costs.  It runs about $5/month per student, which includes meals, uniforms, books, etc.

Another prospective project is the establishment of clinics in remote areas employing indigenous men who have been trained in first aid in Australia.

Next Week's Program:   District Governor, Riki Itner will talk to the club about her goals and aspirations for her year as District Governor of District #5150.

Club News:  TOW is less than two months away.  Please bring email addresses and/or phone numbers of potential guests to this week's meeting.  Think friends, relatives, former speakers, project beneficiaries, past and future, prospective members.  We haven't sold ONE ticket yet.  We also need sponsors!

FYI (courtesy of Barbara Schmidt) Our club was chartered in March 1996.  Some of the original
charter members still active are:  Bob Buelteman, Ken Broome, Ken Hayes, Art Barker and Dean Babcock.  Thanks for being so dedicated.
