This Week's Program: Library Project in Guatemala Finished!
Past-President and Wandering Newsletter Editor, Joan Fuetsch, will show photos and discuss the recent opening of the rural community library in Xolsacmalja, Sacatapequez, Guatemala. Our club made a significant contribution to this library and learning center that was a five year dream of the indigenous villagers. The first person to pronounce the location of the library correctly will receive a 1lb bag of the world's best coffee. Said coffee will be for sale for $10 a pound. Proceeds go to support the libraries. Great coffee is a good alternative to a bottle of wine as a gift and also goes well with Girl Scout cookies.
Last Week's Program: (courtesy of Last Week Editor, Dean Babcock)
President-elect David Hyman introduced Ana Lara and Olivey Rumbo, our speakers, and Todd Dickson principal of Summit Charter High School. David commented that Summit is in the top 1% of schools. Todd pointed out that scholarships awarded to Ana and Olivey were much appreciated since they are in need of funds for their college education.
Ana thanked our club for the scholarship. She said that she enjoyed attending Summit where all the students have a mentor to help them. She is happy to follow her older sister who was in the first class to graduate from Summit. They are the first in their family to attend college. She will go to Sacramento State and plans to become a teacher
Olivey lives in Menlo Park and is the first in her family to go to college. Her favorite course at Summit was AP Government. She will be going to San Francisco State and hopes to become a teacher.
Next Week's Program: 2009-2010 President Dave Hyman will talk about his goals for the club for year as president. He would like to have three new members by the end of the year and he has lots of other plans as well. This would be a good chance to bring prospective members so that they might find out what our club will be about over the next year.
