Last Week's Program: (courtesy of Last Week Editor, Dean Babcock)
President-Elect Dave Hyman (former Navy Seal) spoke about the training given Navy Seals that helped in the recent rescue, from the Somali pirates, of kidnapped merchant ship Captain Phillips. Dave was a Navy Seal from 1974 to 1978. . They are good at what they do because of training, equipment and intelligence. It’s all about teamwork!
The Seals (sea/air/land) were created in 1962 by JFK. The Seals undergo the toughest training in the world. In basic training Dave saw a movie about the Frogmen and got really excited. He signed up for the Seals training which consisted of endless situps/pushups/pullups, swimming (above and below the water), running in boots and full clothing in the sand, parashooting, being sleep deprived for 5 days, being waterboarded, learning to shoot underwater and above, learning to use C-4 (plastic high explosive) without blowing himself up, being ejected from a submarine and then retrieved. He said the last phase was the diving phase where he trained with dolphins. The dolphins would swim under him and try to push him to the surface and it was his job to avoid this maneuver. Each man (never has been a female Seal) got two tries at every test or he could simply quit. They began with 72 men and finished with 12. Nine of these men stayed in the service until just a year or so ago. The credo of the Seals is survival, evasion, resistance and escape. Dave is quite the guy!
